A NEW SERIES 📱.
I know I’ve been missinnnn’, Babes. Look: Earlier this year, I started diving into books, articles, and podcasts about the effects of the internet and social media on our overall wellbeing. It’s mind-blowing to see how much has changed in just the last 10 years. The first smartphone apps were introduced in 2008 (the year I graduated high school), and since then we’ve witnessed rapid, sweeping shifts in our society.
Over the past year, I also started paying attention to my own screen time—and how it affects my health. Honestly? It’s kind of embarrassing. On average, I spend the equivalent of a part-time job every week on screens. And I know I’m not alone. Sometimes, I’ll set my phone down in public and just look around. Nine out of ten people are hunched over, faces buried in their devices. Occasionally, someone glances up and meets my eyes with a look like, “What are you staring at?” And honestly, I can’t even blame them. These days, it’s more unusual to see someone not on their phone than to see them glued to it.
That’s why I’m taking a big, indefinite step back from social media. I’ve written a series of pieces about the “whys” behind this decision. You’ll find these posts in the “ Mental Toolbox”. And let me be clear: this is NOT some kind of virtue-signaling series meant to shame anyone for using social media. Absolutely not. I’m not planning to disappear from it completely, either. My goal is simply to open up space for a real dialogue about the role social media plays in our lives. I want to discuss how it impacts our spiritual, physical, and mental spaces. I hope this series sparks conversations and reflections that spill into your friend groups, dinner tables, and communities.
As always, thanks for coming along for the ride.
